Fresh Local Fall Produce Still Coming In!

The weather may be getting cooler, but local farms are still harvesting plenty of fresh veggies! We’ll continue to have lots of Jersey Fresh produce for you every day, right through Thanksgiving – including fresh Jersey cranberries for your Thanksgiving dinner, muffin recipes, or whatever else your heart desires. And we have many more fresh local selections including:

Homestead Local Fall Produce

And of course, other USA produce that’s no longer being grown in NJ will still be available through December.

Homestead’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest Winners!

As you saw in the last blog and newsletter, we brought back our pumpkin decorating contest this year. In early October, Debbie gave pumpkins, gourds and more to South Hunterdon Regional High School’s art teacher, Marissa Sozio, whose Tech Art Class and Advanced Art Class students used their talent and creativity to come up with fabulous entries in four different categories.

We displayed their marvelous creations in our farm market from October 15-30, and Homestead customers voted for their favorites. We’re proud to announce the winners of each category:

  • Superhero: Superman, created by Allyson Siwy
  • Scary: 3-D Face, created by Shakti Zhuraw
  • Funny: Wrecking Ball, created by Amanda Brewi
  • Day of the Dead: Coco, created by Laura Adams, Breanna Heisler, Julia Hess

Congratulations to the winners, who each received a Homestead gift certificate! And thank you to Marissa and all of her students who came up with so many wonderfully creative designs – every single one was excellent!

Holiday Dinner Menu and Order Form

The holidays are fast approaching, and Homestead is ready to help you with your holiday dinners! Whether you’re entertaining a large group, having a holiday party, or serving up an intimate dinner for just a few, you can pre-order your favorites, from a full dinner for six or more to a few side dishes or desserts.

Our menu includes a selection of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes to help fill out your menu for any dinner guests who have special dietary preferences. We’re also happy to accommodate your needs – if you want a dish that contains cheese (like our mixed greens salad with roasted beets, fruit and goat cheese) but you have some vegan guests coming, we can put the cheese on the side for you.

You can also pre-order gluten-free apple pies and/or pumpkin pies. While we always have a few pies in our farm market, it’s best to order in advance so you’re guaranteed to get what you want.

You can find our menu and order form here: http://bit.ly/HolidayMenu19

**Thanksgiving orders must be received by November 22.
**Christmas orders must be received by December 18.

Pumpkins, Gourds and Pumpkin Ice Cream

Pick up some pumpkins or gourds to give your décor or dinner table that special once-a-year autumn splendor! We also have sugar pumpkins for home chefs who enjoy cooking or baking from scratch.

Add a taste of fall to your meals with our Homestead Apple Salsa and homemade applesauce, Melick’s Apple Cider (sparkling or regular), and Arctic’s Pumpkin Ice Cream, perfect on its own or as a special à la mode treat. For a refreshing drink, you can make a pumpkin float by pouring cold coffee over a couple scoops of pumpkin ice cream…top with whipped cream and a little sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of caramel and you’ve got a mouthwatering dessert.

Fresh produce every day. Locally grown produce in season. Homemade lunches and dinners to go. Fresh-baked award-winning pies.

Holidays

At Homestead we believe in giving back to the community and in doing what we can to preserve the environment. In that spirit, our ongoing employee charity drive endeavors to do both. It works like this: Every few weeks an employee chooses a charity to donate to and for every customer who uses their own bags we put a nickel into a donation jar. “We want to put out the message to use less plastic,” says employee Roz Dunn. It’s Homestead Market’s hope that not only can we give back, but also do our part to encourage and remind our customers that reusing and recycling means one less plastic bag and a little smaller carbon footprint.

Over the past three years Homestead has donated to nearly 50 organizations across a broad and diverse spectrum locally and internationally, from animal and human rights groups to churches, hospitals, food banks and educational foundations.

As thoughts of turkey and stuffing, football and pumpkin pie transition into dreams of a White Christmas and boughs of green, holly and ivy, here are a few holiday fun-facts to ponder.

•  The first Macy’s Day Parade debuted in 1924 and featured real animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo.

•  The German American illustrator Anthony Frederick Sarg orchestrated the helium-filled inflatable cartoons that are now synonymous with the Macy’s Day Parade. Incidentally, he also owned a shop in New Hope, Pennsylvania called Tony Sarg’s, a children’s store, where he also sold his own textiles, wallpapers, rugs and furniture.

•  The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for a Thanksgiving celebration.

We hope you’ll share your fun facts and your thanks with your family and friends this holiday season. Feel free to drop a nickel or two in our donation jar. We’ll be here until Christmas Eve and then bid you and yours good tidings, a cozy winter and blessings until we see you again for our 2018 Spring opening.
