Homestead News

To everyone in our wonderful community: Ed and I have some bittersweet news to share with you. After a LOT of consideration for many months, we have decided it’s time to enter the next phase of our lives and retire. This was an extremely difficult decision for us, but we feel the time is right, and we wanted to let our community family know.

Homestead will continue the same as always through the end of the 2020 season, and it is our hope that someone will continue our dream of Homestead! Perhaps someone will seize the opportunity to continue Homestead as a year-round business.

We are so grateful to our customers for your continued support and also to our employees, without whom we couldn’t do what we do.

Now on to our other updates.

Flavors of Fall

The crisp air of fall is arriving, which means that pumpkins, gourds, mums, Jersey Fresh apples, pumpkin pie, apple cider and a fall favorite—apple cider donuts—and more are all now waiting for you in our farm market!

We’re also busy making our pumpkin-cranberry bars and our pumpkin bread, both of which will be available through December. We’ll have apple cider donuts through October, and we’re currently working on our 2020 holiday menu, which will be out shortly.

Your Generosity

We’re happy to report that the donations we’ve collected so far this year for Farmers Against Hunger has amounted to $533! Thank you for your continued generosity in helping FAH to reduce food insecurity and food waste.

New Products In Our Market

We’re now carrying a variety of Rice Select products, from Texmati (the first aromatic rice successfully grown in the US!) to tri-color couscous to their newest product, tri-color quinoa. Quinoa is gluten-free and loaded with minerals as well as all nine amino acids, so while you’re adding a tasty ingredient to your meals, you’re also adding a healthy one!

Low in calories but high in protein, Kitchen Basics Bone Broth is a super healthy and super tasty way to strengthen your immune system just in time for cold and flu season. Great for sipping, as the basis for more complex soups, or as an ingredient in your recipes.

Fresh produce every day. Locally grown produce in season. Homemade lunches and dinners to go. Fresh-baked award-winning pies.

Love Our Lambertville

September—the gateway to fall—is already upon us! We’re expecting to have the first fall flowers in next week—watch our Facebook page for their arrival! The summer has given us a bounty of delicious Jersey Fresh local fruits and veggies, and Lambertville has given us some fun and exciting ways to support our local businesses as they continue navigating their way through these challenging times. In case you missed them on our Facebook page, here are 2 programs going on right now:

Love Our Shops

Love Our Shops

This is Lambertville’s “shop local” incentive program that gives you a discount for patronizing participating Lambertville shops and restaurants. It’s easy, here’s how it works:

  • Shop at any participating business in the graphic below
  • Present your same-day receipt to another participating business
  • Receive a discount on your purchase

That’s it! Love Our Lambertville, Support Our Shops!

Lambertville New Hope Rotary Club and Delaware River Towns Chamber of Commerce (DRTCC) Partnership

Now through September, you can help make a difference by just posting pictures of business storefronts in Lambertville and New Hope, then posting them to social medial with a special hashtag. Here’s the info from the DRTCC website:

The Rotary Club will make a donation to Fisherman’s Mark to battle food insecurity and related issues for every photo of storefronts of businesses in the Lambertville/New Hope area. The total amount to be donated by the Rotary Club is up to $1,000 during August and September 2020. There is no obligation to make any purchase or to enter any facility.

Just safely visit the location, take a photo of the storefront, and post it on social media with #loveourshops. Both the DRTCC and the Lambertville New Hope Rotary Club invite your participation but ask that you do so in a safe manner, wearing facial coverings, and practicing social distancing as appropriate.

Market Meals Update

Have you seen our Facebook posts about the new way we’re doing our Market Meals? The change offers a more contact-free in-store pickup, and you don’t need to call in your order in advance anymore (unless you prefer curbside pickup). Here’s how it works:

  • Choose from 3 mains: Mediterranean chicken, sandwich, or soup.
  • Choose 2 sides: there will be standard sides as well as weekly additional sides to choose from. Salads and additional sides will already be in containers – no extra contact.
  • Each week the new additional sides will be pinned here on Facebook and will be on our website.
  • Standard sides (always available): Garden Salad, Chips, Bottle of Water, Piece of Fruit, Cookie (individually wrapped)
  • Additional sides (change weekly): Updated weekly; pinned to Facebook, at our deli counter, and updated on website (ly/HomesteadDailyMenu)

So…is it hot enough for you? The summer heat and humidity this year have many of us running to pools, beaches or air conditioning, but our gardens are loving it! Our zinnia garden has been blooming beautifully since mid-July, and lots of you are coming in for fresh ready-made bouquets or are picking your own straight from our garden. We hope everyone is enjoying adding nature’s vivid summer colors to their homes; we expect the zinnia garden to bloom right through August.

Paying It Forward

You may have noticed a new donation can at our register over the past six weeks—we believe it’s important to give back now more than ever, and supportingLoose change jar for charity worthy charities is one way to do that. But there are so many good causes and charities, it’s hard to pick just one, so we decided to let our employees do the choosing.

Every other week a different Homestead team member selects a charity that’s near and dear to their heart, and for the next two weeks, our customers can donate their loose change if they so choose. The charities that have been selected so far are:

  • Loveland Foundation (chosen by Melissa)
  • Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue (chosen by Jen)
  • Doctors Without Borders (chosen by Stella)
  • Cookies for Kids’ Cancer (chosen by Emily)

We’re so grateful for the generosity of our customers, and on behalf of the Homestead team, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We plan to continue collecting donations for various charities through the end of the year.

New Products In Our Market

Fulper Farms Kefir is locally made by the same family farm that makes all the Fulper Family cheeses you love. Called the “champagne of milk”, this fermented milk has some fizz and is known to be not only deliciously refreshing, but it can also aid in digestion and help settle upset tummies. We have plain, peach and strawberry—if you’ve never had kefir, this is the perfect time to try your favorite flavor!

We have two new products from Cucina & Amore: Artichoke Bruschetta and Sundried Tomatoes in Oil. This family-owned company uses old family recipes to make their products, as well as all recognizable non-GMO ingredients. The bruschetta and sundried tomatoes can be used in a variety of ways, from perking up sandwiches and snacks to adding a new flavor to recipes. Discover something new!

And don’t forget, we get deliveries of fresh seafood every Wednesday and Friday from Heller’s Seafood Market in Warrington, PA!

Support Lambertville’s Restaurants

Our community business owners need your support now more than ever. And our restaurants continue to feel the impact of the past lockdown coupled with current restrictions on indoor dining that will remain in place indefinitely.

Lambertville, NJ restaurants

While it’s enjoyable to patronize restaurants that offer outdoor seating, not all of our Lambertville restaurants have the outdoor space to add tables and chairs. Please don’t forget these wonderful and important members of our community—they still offer takeout that you can enjoy al fresco in your own yard or on your porch. You can even challenge yourself to create a new dining “experience” at home—dress up your outdoor table with a flower bouquet, votive candles, or take out those special decorative napkins or table settings you only use for guests (you’re special too!) and you’ll feel like you’re dining at a very special restaurant.

Early Summer News

Lambertville is beginning to open up again—it’s wonderful seeing people enjoying all the open-air dining at restaurants. Here at Homestead, we’re still offering curbside pickup, but if you feel like having a Market Meal or one of our other lunch selections al fresco, feel free to enjoy your lunch outside our market at one of our picnic tables.

Homestead is proud to be one of the sponsors of Reborn’s car decorating contest in honor of Pride Month! (Reborn is a social initiative whose goal is to give depressed and suicidal teens and young adults in Hunterdon County the help they need.) The rules are simple—here they are, quoted from Reborn’s Facebook page:

Decorate your car in rainbow colors and deck it all out for pride, post it on Instagram and/or Facebook, and hashtag it #RebornPrideMonth! The contest will end July 10th. Top five winners will get prizes from our lovely sponsors. Happy decorating!

For the first time in years, Jersey corn won’t be in in time for Fourth of July. BUT…we will have southern corn available by Friday, July 3—just for the July 4th weekend—because we know fresh corn is a barbecue star for this holiday weekend! Here’s what happened with local corn—a late frost slowed the growth of Jersey corn and tomatoes, so we’re hoping they’ll be in by mid-July and that they’ll have a longer season. Jersey peaches have also been slowed down by the late frost, so they may be a bit delayed as well. We do have plenty of other summer fruits and veggies, including Jersey blueberries and strawberries. We’ll let you know on social media as soon as Jersey corn and tomatoes are in.

We’ll be open normal hours on July 4th—9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We’re fully stocked with wonderful meats for your barbecue weekend, including Wagyu beef, chicken, lamb, and veal cutlets and patties.

Don’t forget the BBQ Buddha sauce!

Meet The Farmer

Our local farmers have been working hard to continue supplying us with the farm-fresh produce, dairy and meats you love and depend on. We’d like to introduce you to Bobby of Pittstown Poultry in Cherryville, NJ, whose eggs are regular and welcome features on our shelves.

Pittstown Poultry logo

Pittstown Poultry grew from a love of chickens, and when Bobby and his fiancée shared some of their eggs with friends and family, the word quickly spread and demand for their fresh eggs grew. Before they knew it, their chicken farm grew from 100 birds to 2,000, and a new business was born.

These chickens are pasture-raised and lovingly fed with a special blend of homemade non-GMO feed (all of the ingredients are certified non-GMO), and Bobby makes fresh batches of feed every week. The eggs are brought to market while they’re still very fresh – only 3-4 days old – and they’re packaged in eco-friendly reusable, recycled cartons. You can bring the carton back to Homestead, and Bobby will pick them up and clean them, then reuse them.

You can immediately recognize Pittstown Poultry eggs by the square shape of their cartons – customers are always commenting on how easily the square carton fits in their fridge!

Exciting New Products On Our Shelves!

We think you’ll love Fork’d Pierogies, one of the new additions to our Homestead family! These homemade, handmade, all natural pierogies are made by owner and executive chef Abbey Gordon right in Hellertown, PA. Having grown up on a midwestern farm, Abbey knows what good homestyle cooking is all about. In our freezer section, you’ll find these Fork’d pierogies: cheddar, spinach artichoke jalapeno, and sauerkraut. You can find out more about Fork’d on their website or Facebook page.

Naked Botanical teas

Add some natural goodness to your kitchen with The Naked Botanical’s herbal teas and salt blends! We have a variety of their herbal teas, which have no added artificial or natural flavorings – just honestly naked herbs. And their farm has recently been certified as organic! We’re also carrying their two salt blends, which are so flavorful that just a little goes a long way. It only takes a sprinkle to add a new dimension to your soups, stews, meats, salads, sauces…whatever your tastes crave.

Have you tried Baked in Brooklyn Sesame Sticks? They’re low in calories but high in flavor and have great ingredients. And yes, they really are based in Brooklyn, where their bakery runs 365 days a year. They’re a true neighborhood bakery with a lot of community spirit – we’re happy to carry their sesame sticks!

Try Something New!

Try Something New!

Try Something New!

First Things First…

Before we get rolling with the latest Homestead news, we’d like to again thank our wonderful Lambertville community for their continued support of our small business. We’re doing our best to keep our shelves stocked with all the fresh produce, dairy, meats, and pantry items you need. As restrictions are slowly lifted and more businesses start to open, we hope everyone will patronize our local businesses as much as possible to help them get back on their feet and continue to be staples of our town.

We’d also like to remind everyone that our shorter store hours for this season are 9-5, seven days a week.

Introducing…

…three more new products in our market this season: Frutero ice cream, Jersey Italian Gravy, and Better Than Milk!

Just in time for summer’s heat, we’ve got a refreshing new ice cream—Frutero, made from 100% real fruit. Choose your favorite flavor or try something new from the variety in our market: mango, passion fruit, coconut, guava and guanabana.

Jersey Italian Gravy is an authentic Italian gravy with a great story behind it, which you can read on their website. The old family recipe comes straight from an Italian restaurant in North Jersey and is made with only fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes, no puree or concentrates. The gravy is slow-simmered, perfectly balanced and all natural, with no artificial preservatives – your family will think you cooked all day!

There’s never been a better time for shelf-stable “alt-milks” – dairy alternatives made by Better Than Milk. These plant-based almond, oat, rice and hazelnut rice milks are creamy, organic and responsibly packaged in an environmentally conscious facility. So even if you’re not vegan, you’ll still enjoy this new milk alternative we now carry!

One of the new products we’re carrying this season, Louis Organics’ brand Almazara de Alcaraz extra virgin olive oil, won the Gold Award at 2020 NYIOOC out of over 870 extra virgin olive oils! If you haven’t tried it yet, we think you’ll love it as much as we do.
