Homestead’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest Is Back!

Homestead’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest Is Back!

One of many fun fall activities is expressing your creativity by decorating pumpkins! We know we’ve got lots of talented kids in our area, and we’d like to show you a sample of their creative genius. So for Halloween month, we’re resurrecting the pumpkin decorating contest, and you get to pick the winners!

Pumpkins at Homestead Lambertville, NJ

On September 27, Debbie dropped off pumpkins, gourds and more to Marissa Sozio, an art teacher at South Hunterdon Regional High School. Her Advanced Art Class and Tech Art Class will decorate the pumpkins that we’ll put on display in our farm market starting October 15. Every purchase gets you a vote in the following categories:

  • Superhero
  • Scary
  • Funny
  • Day of the Dead

There’s only one rule – no carving! The creation with the most votes in each category will win a gift certificate to Homestead.

Voting is open October 15-30, so make sure to come by and vote for your favorites!

Fall hours start October 14
Monday – Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (no change)

Jersey Fresh Fall Produce and Mums!

Jersey Fresh Fall Produce and Mums!

Summer may be ending, but we’ve still got plenty of Jersey Fresh produce continuing to come in after Labor Day and right through fall! Here are just some of the local crops you’ll find here through October:

Tomatoes – until the first frost
(Also a special variety of German heirloom tomatoes grown on
Thad’s family farm in Delaware Township, NJ!)

We’ll also have Jersey Fresh eggplant, peaches and nectarines until their growing season ends— typically mid-September—unless Mother Nature grants us more time!

Of course, as New Jersey’s produce season wanes, we’ll still have plenty of fresh USA crops in our farm market, along with our fully stocked baked goods, house-made prepared dishes, and a full selection of pantry items.

You can see our full Jersey Fresh harvest schedule (dates are approximate) with the fruits and veggies we’ll have available right through December here.

Here come the mums! Our greenhouse and yard are filled with autumn beauty – mums and a few other flower varieties have just come in, ready and waiting to bloom in your garden and on your porch!

And Speaking of Fresh Tomatoes…

We’d like to introduce you to Thad, whose amazing heirloom tomatoes we’ve all been enjoying this summer! Thad grows a special variety of German heirloom tomatoes on his family farm in Delaware Township, NJ – you may have seen pictures of these beauties in our August 30 Facebook post.

These wonderful heirloom tomatoes will be farm-fresh well into fall – usually until the first frost – so you can enjoy them for several more weeks!

Summer Fruits, Sampling Saturdays, Ditching Disposables Forum

Summer Fruits, Sampling Saturdays, Ditching Disposables Forum

…to everyone who joined us in celebrating both our 30th anniversary and the Friends of Ely Park’s beautification project! We had a great time and were thrilled to see so many people having fun together and enjoying the games, inflatables, food, and music. Also big thanks to the Friends of Ely Park, Union Fire Company, musicians, and everyone else who contributed to making this special day a success.

Homestead 30th Anniversary

Ditching Disposables Forum – You’re Invited!

Your ideas matter – and we want to hear them! The Lambertville Environmental Commission is holding a Sustainable Business Forum on Wednesday, July 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the Phillip J. Pittore Justice Center, 25 South Union Street, Lambertville. The forum will focus on the role of local businesses in the Ditching Disposables ordinance, which goes into effect on January 1, 2020 – just six months away. Find out how together, businesses and residents can be part of the solution to end single-use plastics, Styrofoam containers, plastic straws, etc.

As one of the businesses that has begun the transition early, Homestead will be talking about our efforts thus far to comply with this eco-friendly initiative and where we plan to go from here. You can find out more about the forum on the Lambertville Environmental Commission’s Facebook event.

Sampling Saturdays Schedule

We’ll be having samples every Saturday throughout August from 1 to 4 p.m. – here’s a schedule of what you can look forward to:

  • August 3:  Homestead’s tomatoes w/ fresh mozzarella
  • August 10: Sample some Siam favorites
  • August 17: Salsa Saturday
  • August 24: Enjoy some goodies from Greg, our baker
  • August 31: Hanks Hot Sauce Saturday

Summer Fruits Are Here In Abundance!

One of the things we all look forward to most is summer fruits, especially since so many of them are Jersey Fresh from local farms. Besides being special seasonal treats, they’ve got plenty of health benefits too, so you can snack away without feeling guilty, or use them in recipes like peach salsa, which is great with fish. And watermelon is a delicious way to stay hydrated on those super-hot days – for both you and your pup, as long as you remove all seeds and don’t let Fido chew on the rind! (It’s always best check with your vet first to make sure any new food is safe for your dog.)
