Summer Fruits, Sampling Saturdays, Ditching Disposables Forum

…to everyone who joined us in celebrating both our 30th anniversary and the Friends of Ely Park’s beautification project! We had a great time and were thrilled to see so many people having fun together and enjoying the games, inflatables, food, and music. Also big thanks to the Friends of Ely Park, Union Fire Company, musicians, and everyone else who contributed to making this special day a success.

Homestead 30th Anniversary

Ditching Disposables Forum – You’re Invited!

Your ideas matter – and we want to hear them! The Lambertville Environmental Commission is holding a Sustainable Business Forum on Wednesday, July 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the Phillip J. Pittore Justice Center, 25 South Union Street, Lambertville. The forum will focus on the role of local businesses in the Ditching Disposables ordinance, which goes into effect on January 1, 2020 – just six months away. Find out how together, businesses and residents can be part of the solution to end single-use plastics, Styrofoam containers, plastic straws, etc.

As one of the businesses that has begun the transition early, Homestead will be talking about our efforts thus far to comply with this eco-friendly initiative and where we plan to go from here. You can find out more about the forum on the Lambertville Environmental Commission’s Facebook event.

Sampling Saturdays Schedule

We’ll be having samples every Saturday throughout August from 1 to 4 p.m. – here’s a schedule of what you can look forward to:

  • August 3:  Homestead’s tomatoes w/ fresh mozzarella
  • August 10: Sample some Siam favorites
  • August 17: Salsa Saturday
  • August 24: Enjoy some goodies from Greg, our baker
  • August 31: Hanks Hot Sauce Saturday

Summer Fruits Are Here In Abundance!

One of the things we all look forward to most is summer fruits, especially since so many of them are Jersey Fresh from local farms. Besides being special seasonal treats, they’ve got plenty of health benefits too, so you can snack away without feeling guilty, or use them in recipes like peach salsa, which is great with fish. And watermelon is a delicious way to stay hydrated on those super-hot days – for both you and your pup, as long as you remove all seeds and don’t let Fido chew on the rind! (It’s always best check with your vet first to make sure any new food is safe for your dog.)

In honor of their hard work and the many contributions of our community members in making this dream a reality, we’re excited to join the festivities to celebrate both the revitalized park and our anniversary with our friends and neighbors.

The joint celebration – aptly named Ely Park’s Great Big Day! – will be on July 12 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with lots of fun activities including:

It’s the Jersey Fresh Time of Year!

It’s the Jersey Fresh Time of Year!

Jersey Fresh Veggies for May!

Asparagus – All of May

It’s finally asparagus season! What a versatile vegetable – they’re wonderful raw in salads or as a crunchy snack by themselves or with your favorite dip. And of course, they’re also great as a side dish – sautéed (quick and easy – sauté with olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon juice and parmesan), grilled, roasted, or steamed and topped with a complementary sauce. Add them sliced to soups, noodle and rice dishes, or anything your heart desires.

You can keep your Jersey Fresh asparagus fresh longer by treating asparagus bundles like a bouquet of flowers – trim the ends and stand them up in a container with about 2 inches of water, leaving the elastic on. Cover them with a loose plastic bag and keep refrigerated; change the water if it gets a bit cloudy. Your asparagus should stay fresh right to the tips for a full week.

Lettuce – May 20-July 15

Jersey Fresh lettuce is, of course, perfect in salads and sandwiches, but there are even more ways you can use these healthy greens.

  • Like its leafy green cousins, lettuce can be shredded and used as a soup-topper for added crunch and freshness. It can even be grilled, then topped with parmesan or dressing.
  • Lettuce wraps are a great way to replace bread and get an extra serving of greens – fill them with tuna or chicken salad, meats topped with sprouts and/or shredded carrots, falafel, or use your creativity for something totally different. You can even spread the leaves with hummus, an aioli or another type of condiment for a healthful, tasty and guilt-free lunch or afternoon snack.
  • Stir-fry lettuce as a side to or part of Asian dishes. Chopped lettuce can be added to rice and noodle bowls too.

Spinach – May 5-June 25

Naturally nutrient-rich, Jersey Fresh spinach is one of those leafy greens that you want to take advantage of when it’s at its peak locally. If you’re not a fan of adding crispy raw spinach to your salads, there are plenty of ways to tuck it into recipes and still get all that great nutrition.

  • Replace half of the basil in your pesto recipe with spinach – you’re adding even more vitamins and minerals to your dish.
  • Add chopped spinach to quiches and frittatas.
  • Include shredded or chopped spinach to soups and stews.

Jersey Fresh fruits and veggies will be with us now and throughout the summer – take advantage while they last!

Lots of Mulch Varieties!

Mulch not only makes your garden and landscaping look neat and attractive, it also nourishes the soil, plants, and trees while helping the soil maintain moisture during those hot summer days. You’ll find a selection of Jolly Gardener hardwood, cedar, root and black mulch at Homestead – we even deliver locally.

Homestead’s Eco-Friendly Sustainability Initiative

Last month we told you about Lambertville’s new plastic bag ordinance that will officially take effect on January 1, 2020. We at Homestead have jumped in already with our reusable handmade t-shirt bags, each with a different look. Our reusable t-shirt bags are only $2, with proceeds going to the St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop in Lambertville. We’re also carrying mesh produce bags in a variety of sizes.

If you forget your reusable bags, just visit our Take a Bag, Leave a Bag tree, where you can pick up a bag or two for that day’s shopping at Homestead. Next time you visit, pay it forward by donating a couple of reusable bags to the tree for others to use in a pinch.

Every little bit helps to keep our beautiful Delaware River free of plastic debris while furthering our community’s sustainability and eco-friendliness. We’ll keep you up to date on the Lambertville Environmental Commission’s “Ditching Disposables” initiative and any of their special events in our blog posts and on our Facebook page. Sign up for our newsletter to stay updated in your inbox.

Welcome Back! Opening for the Season April 12

Welcome Back! Opening for the Season April 12

We’re opening for our 30th season on Friday, April 12! Where did the time go? It’s hard to believe thirty years have gone by since we opened our farm market, and we’ve loved every minute of providing fruits, veggies, gardening supplies and prepared foods to our wonderful Lambertville community.

April is Ablaze in Flower Glory!

Spring is the season of vibrant colors just waiting to brighten your home and landscaping! Our hanging plants, flower and vegetable plants and gardening supplies from mulch, soil and organic compost to seeds, baskets and pots (including eco-friendly selections) are just waiting to help you make your home look its best, inside and out.

We’ll even help you pot your plants—just bring us one of your pots or buy one of ours, pick out a plant from our large selection, and we’ll pot it for you.

What’s In For April?

Everything! You’ll find all our shelves fully stocked with fresh produce, ready for your meal planning and recipes. Every month, we’ll be sharing with you on our blog and on Facebook all the local seasonal produce you can look forward to. Tag us on Instagram (@homestead_farm_lambertville) and show us how you use our fruits and veggies in your recipes, and don’t forget to pick up something yummy from our bakery section for dessert. We’ve got fresh breads and some gluten-free selections too!

Don’t feel like cooking? Running on a tight schedule? We’ve got you covered with lots of delectable prepared dishes for both lunch and dinner, plus our famous Market Meals that are plentiful and a great value.

And we’re stocking our pantry with lots of local artisan products—who can resist Griggstown Farm meats or Sugar Maple Jerseys dairy products?—including local honey, salsas, jams and so much more. We’ve also got plenty of organic and gluten-free selections.

New Lambertville Plastic Bag Ordinance

Recently Lambertville passed a single use plastic bag ban that will help reduce the unrecyclable plastics that not only won’t break down in landfills, but also can make its way to our beautiful Delaware River. Although the new ordinance will take effect on January 1, 2020, we’re excited to help keep Lambertville environmentally friendly now by offering our own handmade reusable shopping bags made from t-shirts, which you can find at our farm market.

We’re also carrying mesh produce bags and introducing our new “Take a Bag Leave a Bag” program. If you have more reusable bags than you need, you can bring them to our “bag tree” and leave them for customers who need one. It’s a different way of recycling and paying sustainability forward.
