Homestead Property Update

Welcome to spring! We wanted to give you an update on Homestead’s future. As you know, after 31 years of serving this great community, Ed and I decided to retire and put our market and property up for sale. After considering several options, we decided to enter into a purchase agreement with the city of Lambertville late last year. The agreement had a 6-month period of due diligence which the city has been actively completing. We have had visits from many architects, engineers, planners, etc. ensuring that the city’s contractual agreements are met. City Council and the CAT team have spent endless hours on the feasibility of this project. Here are the next milestones:

  • This Thursday, March 25, will be the first reading of the bond ordinance for the city to acquire the property. Please note that the purchase will be tax neutral!
  • Thursday, April 22, will be the vote on the bond.

As we transition into the next stage of our lives, we have a favor to ask of you. To all of you who have been loyal customers over the years, to all of you who have spent countless hours sledding down the hill with your children, to those who enter Lambertville and enjoy driving by this beautiful property, it is imperative that you call into the special meeting of the City Council this Thursday, March 25 at 6:00 PM and voice your support for the purchase. Rejection of this ordinance would very likely result in the loss of this unique opportunity to preserve this property. Rejection of this ordinance could change the face of Lambertville as many of you have known it forever.

It is our hope and prayer that this purchase will enable the preservation of the Holcombe house and property and continue Homestead Farm Market. We encourage you to attend the meetings and thank the City Council and CAT for all of their hard work and show your support.

We are so grateful for all of you, our customer base and the community. To help transition, we continue to remain busy doing our normal winter stuff such as maintaining machinery and gutting and cleaning the market so that the future market owner can hit the ground running and open to the community with limited interruption.

Fresh produce every day. Locally grown produce in season. Homemade lunches and dinners to go. Fresh-baked award-winning pies.

Homestead Property Update

We are excited to announce that we have entered into a purchase agreement with the City of Lambertville for our property at 260 N. Main Street, which includes the historic Holcombe House, Homestead Farm Market and our home.

The city’s current plan is to keep everything fundamentally the same: preserve the house, continue to have the market operate, and possibly move the police department into our home, behind the market, which you cannot see from the road.

They have six months of due diligence, feasibility studies, and community input to complete. We look forward to supporting them through this transition.

We once again want to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our wonderful staff and to you, every single one of our customers. You are all part of our Homestead family and will remain in our hearts even after our retirement.

Please Stay Tuned…

…because we’ll be keeping you informed as things move along with the city, even after we close for the season on December 24. We plan to keep you updated right through the transition; we’ll be giving you a mid-winter update on social media and we may even send out special update newsletters, so stay subscribed to stay in touch and stay informed!

In The Meantime…

In case you missed it on social media, we have a special gift table set up in the market with festive gift-wrapped, ready-to-give gifts for friends, coworkers and family members. Stop by and check it out!

2020 Holiday Menu and Order Form

If you’re opening this newsletter on the day we’re sending it, Happy Halloween! And that means Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. Our Holiday Menu is up with everything you need for a delicious dinner. Please be sure to read the instructions at the top of the menu—ordering needs to adhere to specific Covid guidelines this year. You’ll find details in the notice at the top of the order form; meanwhile, here are some of the most important things to note:

  • All orders, including curbside produce pickup, MUST be placed by 3 p.m. on November 22. This is a strict deadline.
  • Curbside orders must be prepaid with no changes or additions.
  • Gluten-free pies (apple, pumpkin, pecan) must be ordered by November 18.

We’ll be open regular hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) for in-store shopping through Wednesday, November 25 (the day before Thanksgiving); on Thanksgiving Day, we’ll be open from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. for in-store shopping. Our produce cases will be fully stocked and we’ll have plenty of pies available.

Click here for our Holiday Menu order form.

Ed and I have been overwhelmed by (in a good way!) and so grateful for the outpouring of support and love regarding our retirement. We’ll keep you updated on any new developments, but meanwhile, please be assured that we’ll continue doing business as usual and serving our community right through December 24, as always.

New Cold Weather Entrance

When the weather outside is frightful—or just too cold—we’ll be keeping our front door closed and opening the covered side door (where garden pots are located in spring and summer) to use as an entrance. On nice days our front entry door will be open as usual. We’ll still have separate entrance and exit doors in either case, just use the side door as an entrance if the front door is closed.

Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere…

…And especially in our seasonal treats! Our homemade pumpkin bread and cranberry bars are still available and we’ll continue making them through the end of the year. We also anticipate continuing to make our apple cider donuts through Thanksgiving. To top it all off, we have Arctic pumpkin ice cream in stock as well as pumpkin pies.

Original Artwork by Greg Pontier

Our multi-talented baker, Greg, whose artwork has enriched our walls, has decided to make his original comic book art available for sale! These pieces would make a lively, colorful addition to homes and offices, and they’re also great as holiday gifts. Buy whichever one(s) you want and you can take it home the same day.

Sweets and Treats

Did you see Michelle’s homemade sugar cookies in Halloween shapes? They’re delicious, fun and fanciful, and she’ll be making more cutout sugar cookies right through the holidays. They’re perfect as a cheerful weekday/weekend treat or for your holiday table!

We now have Le Bus Bakery iced lemon pound cake in our market, a popular crowd pleaser. And we still have a full range of other Le Bus breads and scones available too!

Fresh produce every day. Locally grown produce in season. Homemade lunches and dinners to go. Fresh-baked award-winning pies.

Homestead News

To everyone in our wonderful community: Ed and I have some bittersweet news to share with you. After a LOT of consideration for many months, we have decided it’s time to enter the next phase of our lives and retire. This was an extremely difficult decision for us, but we feel the time is right, and we wanted to let our community family know.

Homestead will continue the same as always through the end of the 2020 season, and it is our hope that someone will continue our dream of Homestead! Perhaps someone will seize the opportunity to continue Homestead as a year-round business.

We are so grateful to our customers for your continued support and also to our employees, without whom we couldn’t do what we do.

Now on to our other updates.

Flavors of Fall

The crisp air of fall is arriving, which means that pumpkins, gourds, mums, Jersey Fresh apples, pumpkin pie, apple cider and a fall favorite—apple cider donuts—and more are all now waiting for you in our farm market!

We’re also busy making our pumpkin-cranberry bars and our pumpkin bread, both of which will be available through December. We’ll have apple cider donuts through October, and we’re currently working on our 2020 holiday menu, which will be out shortly.

Your Generosity

We’re happy to report that the donations we’ve collected so far this year for Farmers Against Hunger has amounted to $533! Thank you for your continued generosity in helping FAH to reduce food insecurity and food waste.

~ Our current employee-selected charity is Covenant House and was selected by Pedro. ~

New Products In Our Market

We’re now carrying a variety of Rice Select products, from Texmati (the first aromatic rice successfully grown in the US!) to tri-color couscous to their newest product, tri-color quinoa. Quinoa is gluten-free and loaded with minerals as well as all nine amino acids, so while you’re adding a tasty ingredient to your meals, you’re also adding a healthy one!

Low in calories but high in protein, Kitchen Basics Bone Broth is a super healthy and super tasty way to strengthen your immune system just in time for cold and flu season. Great for sipping, as the basis for more complex soups, or as an ingredient in your recipes.
